QR Code Designer (Gemini Skills)

A Comprehensive Guide to Minimalist QR Code Generation and Optical Decoding Architecture under ISO/IEC 18004 Standards (This article introduces the technical and functional structure of the QR Code Designer Skills design, providing the Skills Documentation Page link and the Google Drive folder information containing the SKILL.md file that anyone can directly download and use on their own system at the end of the text.)

In the digital world, QR (Quick Response) codes serve as one of the fastest and most universal bridges between physical surfaces and online data streams, finding widespread use across countless domains ranging from web addresses and Wi-Fi access points to digital business cards (vCard) and geographic coordinates. However, non-standard visual alterations, unnecessarily high matrix versions, or violations of the Quiet Zone often lead to critical engineering issues where generated codes fail to be scanned by optical readers. At the same time, being able to safely decode and inspect what data or redirection link lies behind an encountered QR code image is an equally vital necessity. “QR Code Designer (Skills Edition)” has been designed and developed to meet both of these core needs under a single roof with strict adherence to international standards.

Bidirectional Operating Architecture and Automatic Intent Detection QR Code Designer operates on a bidirectional architecture, functioning both as a matrix designer that generates QR codes from content and as an optical analyzer that decodes uploaded QR code images. When a new interaction begins and the user has not yet shared any data or image, the system opens with the question “✨What should the QR code be prepared for?” and presents the options for Task 1 (Generate QR Code from Content) and Task 2 (Read/Decode QR Code from Image). Thanks to its Automatic Intent Detection protocol, if the user directly inputs text, a web address (URL), or data at the start, the system immediately triggers Task 1 without asking preliminary questions; conversely, if the user directly uploads an image, it immediately runs Task 2 to scan and analyze the visual.

Minimalist and Pure QR Code Design Principles (Task 1) During the generation phase, the system enforces five strict engineering rules rooted in minimalist precision:

  1. Minimal Size Principle: The system selects the smallest matrix version capable of storing the submitted text or web address (starting from Version 1 with 21×21 modules and choosing only the most minimal version required by the data length). It avoids generating unnecessarily dense or high-version matrices, ensuring effortless readability even from a distance or with low-resolution cameras.
  2. Pure Visual Output and Square Ratio: Every generated QR code is produced in a one-to-one (1:1) square image format (.jpg or .png) and displayed directly on the screen.
  3. Black-and-White Color Lock: Unless the user explicitly requests a different color palette, the code is always generated with absolute black (#000000) modules on an absolute white (#FFFFFF) background for maximum optical contrast.
  4. Center (Core) Purity Lock: Unless explicitly requested by the user, no logo, icon, symbol, letter, or image is placed in the center of the QR code. If the user requests a central element, the error correction level is automatically elevated to Level H (30%) and the element is scaled so that scannability remains intact.
  5. Perimeter and Quiet Zone Purity Lock: Unless requested by the user, no text, title, caption, or frame label is added around, above, or below the QR code; only the mandatory pure white safety border (Quiet Zone) of at least 4 modules in width is preserved around the matrix.

Optical QR Code Reading and Security Reporting (Task 2) When any QR code image is submitted to the system, Python computer vision and barcode decoding layers (cv2, pyzbar, PIL) scan the image to extract the raw data in full and present a structured three-part Decoding Report:

  • Content Dump: The exact text or raw data inside the QR code. If the content is a web address (URL), it is displayed as a full, open URL without Markdown link hiding so users can inspect and click it directly.
  • Content Type: The specific category of the decoded data (Web Address/URL, Plain Text, Wi-Fi Connection Information, vCard/Business Card, Email, Phone, Geographic Coordinate, etc.).
  • Technical Structure and Security Check: An assessment of the estimated QR version/matrix dimensions, error correction status, and—for web addresses—an evaluation of domain and redirection security.

Embedded ISO/IEC 18004 Engineering Knowledge Base and Python Precision Rather than performing external web searches every time to look up QR specifications, QR Code Designer directly applies the permanent ISO/IEC 18004 standards embedded in its internal knowledge base. It calculates matrix dimensions from Version 1 (21×21 modules) up to Version 40 (177×177 modules) using the exact formula “Size = 17 + (4 * Version)”. It strictly maintains all mandatory structural patterns: the 7×7 Finder Patterns at three corners, 1-module Separators, alternating Timing Patterns on the 6th row and column, 5×5 Alignment Patterns for Version 2 and above, and the 4-module Quiet Zone. Combining Reed-Solomon error correction levels (L: 7%, M: 15%, Q: 25%, H: 30%) and encoding modes—Numeric, Alphanumeric, Byte/UTF-8 (full support for universal texts and international characters), and Kanji—with Python (qrcode and PIL/Pillow) matrix execution, it eliminates pixel shifting and artistic distortion entirely.
