While waiting at a bus stop one evening last week, I noticed someone standing closer to me than they should have been, and I slowly walked a few steps sideways. Meanwhile, I checked my wallet in my pocket; it was still in its place. As the same person slowly approached, I moved away with a few steps back and forth. Because my movements were slow, he thought I wasn’t aware. However, I was completely aware, and I was playing cat and mouse. When I was finally sure of his intention, I walked away with quick steps; he panicked, got on a bus that was about to leave, the door closed immediately, and the bus left.
I had been the target of a pickpocket, and because I realized it right away, I had avoided the situation without any loss.
At that moment, one of the youths selling water at the bus stop said something like, “Brother, the pickpocket tested you, but you saved yourself well.” It meant I wasn’t mistaken, and they were aware too. A bit reproachfully, and a bit angrily, I asked, “Since you were aware, why didn’t you warn me?”
The boy showed his face; there was a scar on it that hadn’t completely healed yet. He told what had happened to him. A few days ago, at the stop, he noticed a pickpocket testing someone’s pocket and warned the man. As soon as he warned him, three people jumped on him. While one was working, the other two were acting as lookouts, it turned out. The attackers acted innocent, claiming they were seeking justice because they were slandered (!), as they threw punches.
This attack had obviously frightened the young water sellers…
Let’s be careful at stops and on the roads.
