Meritocracy in European Football and the Single Champion: The Aydın Tiryaki Model

Aydın Tiryaki (2026)

In the modern football calendar, the fragmentation of prestige and the lingering question of “who is the ultimate power at the summit?” find a definitive answer in this proposed model. By channeling competition from three different tiers through a staggered filter and unifying them into a single elimination bracket, this structure aims to crown the undisputed sole champion of Europe.

1. Initial Structure: Three Major Leagues of 36 Teams

The system begins with three hierarchical leagues, each consisting of 36 teams. Teams are placed into these tiers based on their domestic league performances and UEFA coefficients:

  1. Champions League (UCL): 36 Teams | 8 Matches
  2. Europa League (UEL): 36 Teams | 7 Matches
  3. Conference League (UECL): 36 Teams | 6 Matches

In this system, there is no “dropping down” between leagues; teams must prove themselves the best in their starting tier and ascend toward the grand final under the Champions League umbrella.

2. Qualification Channels for the “Grand Round of 32”

The 32 teams that will form Europe’s summit bracket are determined through the following filters based on league performance:

A. Champions League Channel (24 Teams)

Out of the 36 teams finishing the UCL league stage, 24 proceed:

  • Direct Qualification: The teams finishing in the top 20 qualify directly for the Round of 32, rewarded for their superior league performance.
  • Internal Play-offs (21st–28th Place): The 8 teams in this range face each other in two-legged ties (home and away). The 4 winners join the Round of 32.
  • Elimination: Teams finishing from 29th to 36th (the bottom 8) are completely eliminated from European competition.

B. Europa League Channel (12 Candidate Teams)

Of the 36 teams in the UEL, 12 are sent to the “Unified Promotion Pool”:

  • Direct Pool Entry: The top 6 teams in the UEL league stage enter the unified pool directly.
  • Internal Play-offs (7th–18th Place): The 12 teams in this range play two-legged play-offs. The 6 winners also join the unified pool.
  • Elimination: Teams finishing from 19th to 36th (the bottom 18) are completely eliminated.

C. Conference League Channel (4 Candidate Teams)

From the 36-team UECL competition, 4 representatives ascend to the unified pool:

  • Direct Pool Entry: The top 2 teams in the UECL league stage join the unified pool directly.
  • Internal Play-offs (3rd–6th Place): The 4 teams in this range play two-legged play-offs. The 2 winners secure their place in the unified pool.
  • Elimination: Teams finishing from 7th to 36th (the bottom 30) are completely eliminated.

3. The Unified Promotion Pool: From 16 to 8

The 12 teams from the Europa League and the 4 teams from the Conference League (16 teams in total) face off:

  • Format: These 16 teams are paired based on coefficients and a draw.
  • Method: Matches are played as two-legged ties (home and away).
  • The Golden Ticket: The 8 resilient winners from these matches join the 24 giants from the Champions League to complete the “Grand Round of 32” bracket.

4. Strategic Calendar and Synchronization

The cornerstone of the model’s operation is the seamless integration of different match volumes (8-7-6) into the calendar:

  1. Staggered Start: Champions League begins in Week 1, Europa League in Week 2, and Conference League in Week 3.
  2. Simultaneous Conclusion: Due to this arrangement, the league stages of all three competitions conclude in the same week.
  3. Internal Play-off Week (1st Play-off Week): In the week following the league stages, all leagues (UCL, UEL, UECL) play their internal play-offs simultaneously. By the end of this week, all eliminations and internal promotions are finalized.
  4. Promotion Week (2nd Play-off Week): During this week, only the 16 teams from the “Unified Pool” (UEL and UECL) play their matches. The 24 teams already qualified from the Champions League spend this week waiting.
  5. The Grand Unification: At the end of the second play-off week, the final 32-team roster is confirmed.

5. Path to the Final: Continuous Two-Legged Eliminations

Once the 32 teams are finalized, the process transitions into a single “Grand Elimination Bracket.” From the Round of 32 through to the end of the Semi-Finals, every round is played as a two-legged elimination (home and away). The season culminates in a single-match Grand Final at a neutral venue to crown the “Single Champion of European Football.”

6. Model Alternatives and Dynamic Flexibility

The Aydın Tiryaki Model is designed with a robust framework that can be adapted to various needs while maintaining its core logic:

  • Participant Volume: Leagues may start with 40 or more teams instead of 36. Regardless of the starting number, the number of teams advancing to the next stages remains fixed. These quotas are non-negotiable, preserving the model’s structural integrity and meritocratic balance.
  • Calendar Modifications and Extra Phases: Specifically, tiers like the Conference League can be started much earlier. The objective here is to create a broader competitive field to determine the fixed number of teams (e.g., 4 teams for UECL) that will enter the unified pool. Without changing the quota, extra elimination phases can be added to allow more teams the opportunity to strive for these spots.
  • The Immutable Core (24+8): The ultimate and unshakeable goal of all alternative arrangements is the unification of 24 teams from the Champions League channel and 8 teams from the Unified Pool to form the 32-team final bracket. This numerical balance is the fundamental “fixed rule” of the model, ensuring mathematical perfection in elimination rounds and upholding the organization’s prestige.
