My First Day with Gemini GEMs

Aydın Tiryaki (2026)

I have been integrating artificial intelligence tools into my daily workflows for a while. However, for some reason, the “Gems” tab on the left menu hadn’t really caught my attention until that day. When I decided to take a closer look at what it was, I encountered what was essentially a personalized AI assistant manager.

First, I saw that there were some pre-prepared “Gems” (jewels/precious stones) by Google, which were in the testing phase. There were various titles like learning coach, career guide, brainstorming, coding support, and text editor. Among them, “Story book” caught my eye. When you give it any story idea, it turns it into a customized 10-page illustrated book for children (and even adults). I made my first attempt with this and was introduced to the world of Gemini Gems.

I Had Actually Created My Own Assistant Long Ago

When I saw the “Create a new Gem” option, a light bulb went off in my head. In fact, even though it didn’t have a name yet, I had manually constructed this “Gem” logic in my previous chats. For example, I had opened a special chat for translation and wrote lengthy translation rules at the very beginning just once: “When translating into English, look not only at the words but also at the context, do not summarize, translate directly without asking me” and gave instructions like this. Instead of starting a new chat every time or rewriting the rules from scratch, whenever I was going to make a translation, I would directly enter that fixed chat I named “Gemini Tr2En”, simply paste the text, and instantly get the translation. The rules were already sitting at the top of the chat. I even successfully translated texts in the web links I shared using this method.

I immediately copied those rules I had written myself from my old chats and pasted them into the instructions section on the “Create new Gem” screen. The result was flawless; it worked instantly. When I further improved the instructions and saved them, my very first custom assistant was open for use.

Co-Production With Artificial Intelligence

Following the success of the first Gem, I designed two more assistants. Later, I opened a new chat window with Gemini and we started talking about this “Gem” concept we had created. We discussed the origin of this naming and why such a name was chosen. GEM actually represented very valuable, specific AI tools that were carefully crafted, sculpted for a specific purpose, and polished.

During this chat, I realized that it was much more logical to get support from the AI itself while writing these instructions. After all, it understands the language of such algorithmic instructions better than any of us. Thus, we embarked on a collaborative effort with Gemini and created a new Gem we named “web2txt”. The sole task of this tool was to pull the text from any web page entirely unformatted, as clean text.

Refining Existing Assistants

I put the instructions of my other three manually prepared assistants (Çeviri Tr2En, Translate En2Tr, and Speech2Text) through a refinement process by sharing them with the AI. I asked it, “Can you make these descriptions and instructions I wrote more proper, more detailed, and technically more functional?”

With these final touches we made together, a total of four Gems became ready to use and extremely sharply functional. None of them were produced just for the sake of it; all were instantly tested and turned into truly useful, practical tools for daily use.

You Too Can Build Your Own Assistant

If you haven’t met Gemini Gems yet, I highly recommend clicking on that little tab on the left menu. You don’t need to know coding or get bogged down in complex technical details. It is enough to describe the task you want to do with simple sentences, just like explaining it to an assistant working next to you. In fact, by giving your descriptions directly to the AI as I did and saying, “Turn this into a Gem instruction,” you can polish your own personal gems in seconds.

In the coming days, I will share the instruction lists of these Gems I prepared for those who want to use them and detail how they work in a separate article. Until then, enjoy designing your own assistants.

A Note on Methods and Tools: All observations, ideas, and solution proposals in this study are the author’s own. AI was utilized as an information source for researching and compiling relevant topics strictly based on the author’s inquiries, requests, and directions; additionally, it provided writing assistance during the drafting process. (The research-based compilation and English writing process of this text were supported by AI as a specialized assistant.)
