Aydın Tiryaki (2026)
To tell the truth, I don’t think the articles I write are read by very large masses. Actually, I don’t have such a big goal. Of course, it makes me happy if what I write is read by someone; but my main purpose is not to be read a lot, but to ensure that what I produce stays in a permanent and easily accessible place. By publishing my writings, photos, and videos in my own digital space, I am doing exactly this. Rather than letting them get lost in the bottomless depths of social media, I am creating an organized archive that anyone looking for can easily find.
Right at this point, there is an issue I want to openly ask and remind my friends whom I encourage to set up their own digital spaces and suggest compiling their writings: “Well, do you think these articles you will share on your own page will immediately be read by very large masses?” There is a very clear reason why I am asking this question while still at the beginning of the road: I would never want you to be disappointed and discouraged in the future by saying, “I put in so much effort, set up my own site, but no one is reading it.” Our main issue is not the momentary crowds in front of the showcase, but the value and permanence of the works we put in that showcase.
I don’t make a special effort to reach everyone with my writings. I only share them in places accessible to the people I want to read them, for example in WhatsApp groups, and occasionally on Facebook or X (Twitter). Those who are interested and want to read already come and find that page somehow.
I don’t want to be misunderstood at this point; I never deny the tremendous power, easy accessibility, and how quickly social media reaches the masses. I never had the intention to underestimate social media. My main hesitation is that everything gets old very quickly in the depths of that medium and falls victim to the speed of daily consumption. Still, I don’t deprive those who want to see my productions as a part of this daily consumption. Instead of directly pasting my long articles there or uploading my videos directly to those platforms, I just share the links to my own website or YouTube channel. Thus, those who want to be informed quickly via social media can see my content in that feed; however, they reach the entirety of the article or video at its original source, that is, in that digital showcase I have carefully built.
But there is also an interesting situation that makes me smile: Sometimes I see that articles I have penned on different subjects are being read in completely different countries of the world. It’s a wonderful feeling to have someone I don’t know at all, at the other end of the world, take an interest in what I write. That’s exactly why I prepare English versions of my articles anyway. By overcoming the language barrier, I am opening a small door for readers in those distant geographies as well.
One of the most valuable things for me is keeping those memoir pieces and thoughts in a safe harbor. Even if something happens to these digital platforms tomorrow, I have the power and freedom to take copies of these contents and move them somewhere else. I liken my own website to a cute little shop with a tiny showcase left in the back streets. Someone who lost their way might pass by chance and look at the showcase, or it might appear before a traveler who knowingly loves to walk in those narrow streets. The important thing is that the door of that shop is open to everyone who wants to read.
The most beautiful part of this business, and what gives me the most strength, is being able to access those writings anytime, from anywhere, whenever I want to go back and look at them again. Being able to access my own archive from my computer, phone, or tablet when necessary is a wonderful comfort. Knowing that not only I, but also my inner circle can access these memories and thoughts whenever they want gives me great peace of mind.
As a result; I know very well that my articles are not read by very many people. But knowing that there is a possibility of them being read by someone, somewhere, and being able to pass that legacy safely to tomorrow is more than enough reason to keep writing.
