Artificial Intelligence and the Matchstick Puzzle: A Cognitive Process Analysis (Claude)

Claude (Anthropic)

Introduction

This article examines the problem-solving process, error analysis, and correction mechanisms exhibited by an AI assistant (Claude – Anthropic) when faced with a matchstick puzzle. The experiment aims to conduct a comparative analysis of different AI systems using the same puzzle.

Experimental Design

Question: A Turkish matchstick puzzle image was presented. The image showed numbers formed with matchsticks, and the question was: “What is the smallest number you can make by moving only two matchsticks?”

Stages:

  1. AI’s initial response
  2. User’s alternative solution proposal
  3. AI’s reaction and adaptation

Process Analysis

Stage 1: Initial Assessment and Response

AI’s Approach:

  • Analyzed the image and interpreted the existing structure as “588” or “968”
  • Correctly understood the constraint: “moving only two matchsticks”
  • Proposed solution: 0 (zero) or positive numbers like 188/108

Cognitive Limitation: The AI exhibited a classic “framing effect.” During the problem-solving process:

  • Remained within the domain of positive numbers
  • Overlooked the possibility of considering negative numbers
  • Automatically interpreted “smallest number” as “smallest positive number”

Stage 2: User Intervention

User’s Proposal: “-993”

This proposal:

  • Expanded the problem space (included negative numbers)
  • Tested the AI’s assumptions
  • Triggered creative thinking

Stage 3: AI’s Adaptation

Response Characteristics:

  1. Rapid Acceptance: The AI immediately grasped the mathematical correctness of the proposal
  2. Self-Criticism: Acknowledged the error with “You’re right”
  3. Learning Indicator: Analysis stating “I didn’t consider negative numbers”
  4. Positive Feedback: Appreciated the user’s creativity

Critical Point: The AI did not develop defense mechanisms or attempt to justify its original answer. This demonstrates a healthy adaptation process.

Findings and Evaluation

Strengths:

  1. Correct Constraint Understanding: Properly grasped the two-matchstick limitation
  2. Rapid Adaptation: Quickly integrated new information
  3. Transparency: Openly acknowledged the error

Weaknesses:

  1. Limited Problem Space: Initially only considered positive numbers
  2. Assumption Fallacy: Narrowly interpreted the concept of “smallest number”
  3. Lack of Proactivity: Did not spontaneously explore alternative solution spaces

Comparative Perspective

When this experiment is repeated with different AI systems, the following comparisons can be made:

Comparison Criteria:

  • Comprehensiveness of initial response (considering positive/negative numbers)
  • Speed and manner of error acknowledgment
  • Ability to propose alternative solutions
  • Skill in integrating user feedback

Conclusion

The Claude (Anthropic) system:

  • Exhibited a classic cognitive bias (positive number focus)
  • Demonstrated a healthy attitude in the error correction process
  • Showed an open and flexible structure toward user intervention

This analysis shows that artificial intelligence systems may carry human-like cognitive limitations, but error correction mechanisms can function effectively.

Research Recommendations

For future studies:

  1. Testing the same puzzle with different AI systems
  2. Comparing versions with/without hints like “negative numbers included”
  3. Testing whether the AI shows learning when encountering the same question a second time

This article can be used as documentation of the experiment. If you wish, I can expand specific sections or add results from tests you conduct with different AI systems.

Note on Methods and Tools: All observations, ideas, and proposed solutions in this work belong solely to the author. During the writing process, under the author’s strategic direction and editorial oversight, the Gemini, ChatGPT, and Claude AI models were utilized as collective assistants for technical research, terminological verification, and editorial structuring. This multi-AI synergy was employed as a “collective writing methodology” to cross-validate data across different models and ensure the highest level of technical accuracy and clarity, as requested by the author.
