A Revolutionary Approach to YouTube Library Management: The Folder System and Hierarchical Model

Aydın Tiryaki (2026)

As the world’s largest visual archive, YouTube has transformed content consumption. However, its “Playlist” infrastructure remains stuck in the “flat list” logic of the platform’s early days. For power users and archivists managing hundreds of playlists, the current structure is no longer a tool for organization; it has become a “technical roadblock.” It is time for a transition to Hierarchical Library Management.

1. The Current Stalemate: The Unwritten “200” Constraint

In the current architecture, all playlists are listed on a single level. As the number of playlists grows, two major issues arise:

  • Navigational Fatigue: Scrolling through 200+ items to find a specific list is time-consuming and cognitively draining.
  • Technical Constraints: Especially on Mobile and TV apps, the UI struggles to load this much data smoothly, often resulting in lag or “cut-off” lists. This leads to a loss of digital labor, forcing users to delete valuable, meticulously curated archives—such as author-based audiobook collections—simply because they become unreachable.

2. Phase One (The Transition): “Nested” Playlists

The fastest way to evolve without overhauling the entire database is to grant playlists the ability to “accept other playlists” as items.

  • In this “Recursive” structure, a playlist can contain both individual videos and themed sub-playlists.
  • This allows users to build a basic hierarchy within the existing framework, grouping related content under a single master list.

3. The Ultimate Goal: The “Folder System”

The definitive solution is a Folder System similar to a PC’s file explorer. In this model, a “Playlist” is the file, and a “Folder” is the thematic container.

Key Parameters of the System:

  • The 200 Master Folder Limit: Only “Master Folders” appear in the main menu. A limit of 200 folders offers immense capacity—mathematically allowing for up to 40,000 units (200 Folders x 200 Sub-lists).
  • Contextual Layers: Folders can be organized into three distinct layers: “Public” (for the community), “Shared” (for families or collaborative groups), and “Private” (for personal research and drafts).

4. User Experience: Two-Stage “Smart Save”

The most significant benefit of this architecture is the “Saving” workflow. Instead of an endless scroll, the user follows a two-step path:

  1. Step 1 (Category Selection): The user sees only Master Folders (e.g., METU Archive, City History, Sports, Audiobooks).
  2. Step 2 (Target Selection): Upon clicking a folder, the system displays only the sub-lists within that category where the user has “write access.”

This transforms the task of finding a needle in a haystack into a graceful, three-click operation.

5. Strategic Gains: Performance and Curation

Implementing this model would provide tangible benefits to the YouTube ecosystem:

  • System Performance: Instead of loading 200+ items at once, the UI loads only 10-15 folders. Data loading becomes “staged,” eliminating lag.
  • Curation Power: Users can add others’ high-quality playlists into their own folders. This enhances “digital guidance,” increasing internal circulation and discovery.
  • Preserving Digital Labor: Users are no longer forced to delete archives due to “unmanageability”; instead, they are encouraged to grow their collections within deeper, organized layers.

Conclusion: A Call for Library Vision

If YouTube aims to be more than a video-hosting site and evolve into a global “Visual Academy,” it must move from “stacking” data to “organizing” it. The Folder System proposed here would not only save the platform’s technical performance but also elevate the user from a “passive viewer” to a “sophisticated archivist and curator.”
