A comprehensive project is being proposed to ensure that all names worldwide are pronounced accurately and authentically in the language spoken in their respective countries. The accurate and consistent pronunciation of the names of internationally recognized individuals, particularly across various platforms such as media and artificial intelligence, is crucial for both the individuals themselves and their audiences. In this context, the goal is to establish a system that will ensure the correct pronunciation of names and facilitate their use in various fields.
The Importance of Correct Pronunciation in the World of Football and Sports
For example, in football teams, many different languages are spoken on the field and on the bench, and communication between players occurs through the common languages. During one football match, the names of players from various countries may be pronounced differently by commentators. The following week, the same player’s name may be pronounced differently by another commentator. This is because everyone pronounces names according to their own language or habits. Phonetic signs and letters are not sufficient to fully address this problem. Not only football players, but also internationally renowned figures such as scientists, writers, and politicians are frequently mispronounced, creating a problem for both the names’ authors and the audience. More importantly, mispronouncing a person’s name is a sign of disrespect.
Application Model for FIFA and International Sports Organizations
To address this issue, FIFA could develop an application that allows all players, managers, referees, and other relevant individuals to record their names in their own voices. In this application, FIFA asks players to pronounce their first and last names correctly, and these recordings will be added to the FIFA database. Additionally, players can record their abbreviations or nicknames in their own voices. This way, commentators and broadcasters can retrieve these recordings or phonetic transcriptions directly from FIFA’s database when receiving match schedules, ensuring they can pronounce names accurately and consistently.
This implementation model could serve as a model for international organizations in other sports. This would standardize the correct pronunciation of names for all professional athletes and the sports community, especially in football. Recordings of athletes’ own voices could also be accurately replicated by AI and used on any platform.
Correct pronunciation of all proper nouns, including the names of sports clubs, can be included in the relevant database.
Expanding Application in the Fields of Art and Politics
In the art world, national and international organizations can develop similar applications to record artists’ names with their original pronunciation. For deceased artists, a an articulate speaker of the country can accurately pronounce the artist’s name and transfer it to a database. This method allows the names of prominent figures, such as artists, athletes, and politicians, to be accurately archived and made available for use.
In the political arena, parliaments, ministries, and political parties can register the names of individuals within their ranks with the correct pronunciation in such a database. Thus, this archive, created as a “Database of Correct Name Pronunciations” or something more meaningful, can be used as a standard across all international media and platforms.
Compiling Information on Historical Figures
Others must step in to identify the names of prominent figures and historical figures. The units in each country most capable of pronouncing these names accurately transfer this information to the database using the appropriate application. The most competent individuals in the language (such as theater actors and announcers) are responsible for dubbing these names. This ensures that their names are passed down to future generations in the most accurate way.
Correct Pronunciation of Place Names According to International Standards
In addition to personal names, place names such as country names, city names, mountains, rivers, lakes, and seas must also be recorded accurately and with their original pronunciation in the local language. Each country could compile its place names in a standard database, and this data could be consolidated under the umbrella of an international organization. This would ensure that the names of all places worldwide could be accurately read both locally and internationally. Furthermore, countries could suggest more appropriate pronunciations for their place names to counter forms that might be negatively or misunderstood in other languages.
Pronouncing Brand Names Correctly
World-renowned brands are among the most fortunate when it comes to ensuring their names are pronounced correctly through advertising. Lesser-known brands are less fortunate. In this regard, each brand will be the most eager to contribute the correct pronunciation information for their own brands, sub-brands, and products to the system.
Ethical Principles of the Application
The application is designed to comply with ethical rules regarding the sharing of personal information. It transfers personal information in written and spoken form. Based on the user’s original voice, the AI creates an artificial/synthetic digital recording containing the correct pronunciation of their name. The user plays this newly created voice and asks if they approve. If the user approves, the correct pronunciation of that person’s name is recorded in the system. Someone uploading their voice to the system may consider their voice to be personal data and may not want it to remain in the system. There is a solution for this. Finally, the user is asked whether they want the original recording of their voice to remain in the system. If the user decides to delete their voice from the system, it is deleted immediately, eliminating the need to record personal information. After this process, the database contains the person’s written name and a digital record of their correct pronunciation. This will not leave any unwanted private voice recordings.
The Realization and Dissemination Process of the Project
In short, international organizations can now archive the names of people and places within their respective fields, both vocally and phonetically. This type of work can be implemented much more easily and effectively than ever before, thanks to the internet and today’s IT and AI ecosystem.
The application’s practical use is quite simple: Just before kickoff at a sports event, the broadcaster transmits the player and official list to the AI-powered application of the sports’ international umbrella organization. This information is instantly retrieved, both vocally and phonetically accurate, and all names are accurately pronounced during the broadcast. This capability is particularly important for AIs working on delivering accurate information. AI companies can jointly undertake this project, thus benefiting people around the world.
Infrastructure and Financing of the Project
The most significant cost of the project will be its software and infrastructure. Since the sectors that will benefit most from this database will be artificial intelligence and media, it would be equitable for an organization formed by these companies to cover the infrastructure and financing. This will not create a significant financial burden for these organizations, which already possess extensive expertise in IT and AI infrastructure. These companies, currently valued in billions or even trillions of dollars, will fulfill not only a financial responsibility but also a global cultural responsibility for humanity.
When Can It Start?
Choosing a specific time to launch the project is important for recognition. For the 2026 FIFA World Cup, this project could be launched at the national team level, thus enabling initial testing. Once the initial core is developed and the application software is widespread, the entire football world will be compiled in this database in a short time.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is creating a database for all athletes and sportspeople participating in the 2028 Olympics. This preliminary work will expand the application to international organizations across all Olympic sports worldwide.
The United Nations will soon create databases containing country names, city names, names of places around the world, and names of important people for countries, and made them available to everyone.
The International PEN Club, the largest international organization that brings together all writers in the world and defends freedom of expression, can begin the project to ensure that the names of all the writers we have lost and those who are alive are mentioned in the most accurate way, starting with very famous names.
It can compile the correct pronunciations of all the names of the cinema and television world in the IMDb database, the most popular and comprehensive information source of the cinema and television world.
International umbrella organizations for music copyright organizations can compile information on the correct pronunciation of names for everyone in the music world.
The most important international organization of historians, the International Committee of Historical Sciences (CISH), can cooperate with local historical institutions of countries to ensure the correct pronunciation of the names of all historical figures.
International organizations of scientific institutions also compile the correct pronunciations of the names of scientists who have worked and are working in the field of world science and technology.
